From raw illustration to e-commerce infrastructure.
Cohort Streetwear was a boutique apparel brand I founded and ran independently, serving as the ultimate test of both my creative endurance and commercial discipline. I didn't just design the assets - I engineered the entire operation from the ground up. My role spanned from the initial hand-illustrated garment designs through to manufacturing, fabric sourcing, and strict production cost management to ensure the brand remained highly scalable and financially viable.
Beyond the physical craft, I architected and managed the brand’s complete digital footprint. I built and optimized the e-commerce infrastructure on Shopify, while simultaneously expanding our market presence by integrating into the Takealot marketplace. From orchestrating complex vendor ecosystems and logistics pipelines to handling precision stock-taking and full-scale retail distribution, Cohort proved that my creative direction is always firmly anchored by real-world commercial reality.
Managing a standalone brand means there is nowhere to hide behind an agency account manager - you are responsible for the entire pipeline. Balancing the meticulous detail of textile design with the cold logic of inventory control, shipping fulfillment, and profit margins taught me how to think like a stakeholder, not just a creative. Ultimately, running Cohort revealed the brutal reality of apparel economics: the margins are razor-thin, the structural overheads are punishing, and scaling to true viability requires heavy institutional investment. Navigating these numbers - right on the cusp of the global disruption of Covid - led me to a decisive business conclusion: without massive capital backing, the model wasn't sustainable. I stepped away not because the creative failed, but because the commercial maths didn't add up - a sobering, executive perspective that I now bring to every client budget and production pipeline I oversee today.
